[yep, pretty much. Though her conversation with Damon is leading to her being a bit more careful with her words. Timelines and all that jazz.]
I do. We met very briefly in New Orleans and he's helping my family out of a particular problem we're having with a local group of vampires. He was introduced to me as an old friend of my brother and an ex-lover of my sister, but I've been told that timelines make these relationships complicated.
[ the inclination to write her words off as farce is strong. it's too easy to reject them, and that's why she can't do it. elena is painfully acquainted with klaus. she's only ever heard of rebekah. she's a faceless name, a name she only ever heard until cami mentioned it. despite elena's best efforts, she hasn't gotten cami to crack on everything else. she's learned little about the future, and she's starting to realize she may not want to know it. but she has to, doesn't she? ]
[There's a pause before she pushes forward not wanting to assume too much or too little.]
My family always makes things complicated, Elena. Their existence complicated the world a very long time ago. I know that my brother is rarely ever the hero in his own story, let alone anyone else's.
I know he has caused many people a great deal of pain, but I swear on my father's ashes that I mean you no harm.
[ that's — that's six years into the future. her future.
stefan couldn't have become friends with klaus and fallen for rebekah in that time, could he? her chest clenches painfully at the mere thought. almost as quickly as that thought comes, she banishes it. boundless faith for stefan surges through her instead: he wouldn't. but he never said anything... he didn't know klaus. how are they old friends? why is klaus in new orleans? where did all this family outside of elijah come from? ]
I believe you mean no harm.
[ it's less naivety, and more that elena is a strategist: if freya or cami meant her harm, elena would be harmed already. ]
He hurt my friends. He killed my family. He killed me. [ it's not an accusation. what klaus did is not and will never be freya's fault. but she wants freya to understand why she and others from mystic falls have such a visceral reaction to him. ]
[She does, truly. She knows that there are reasons that people hate Klaus, and reasons why he has the enemies he does. Especially considering she arrived in Wonderland in the middle of those enemies coming to roost.]
I do not expect you to forgive him. The only reason I am able to do so is because none of my mother's children were able to escape being turned into monsters, and he has done the same for me. But he is also my family.
[ and she does. she isn't here looking for trouble. elena understands why elijah couldn't go through with their plan in the end. she understands why rose kidnapped her to secure her freedom and trevor's. she understands why stefan forgives and loves damon above all things, including her. she understands because she is the same: there is nothing she won't do, and no line she won't cross, for her family. this isn't a story about goodness. ]
Can we meet in person? [ she doesn't trust the devices, at the end of the day. ]
[For a moment she's hesitant, not because she feels she can't defend herself - she's certainly powerful enough to do so, but she's not looking to burn any bridges. Still, at the same time, tone is better conveyed in person and it might help prevent misunderstandings.]
[And she will be, making her way into the coffee shop, or having already found a table, should she happen to arrive first. She is as composed as ever, not giving away anything one way or the other, but this discussion is likely to be a long one and she's prepared for it to go any which way.]
[ elena doesn't want to catch freya unaware, after all. if they're going to tentatively find some common ground and a truce, something she finds quite possible without klaus in the mix, she wants everything to be clear. she doesn't want to play any games. bonnie and elena arrive first, since they live in the first floor as it is, elena straightening in place once she spots her. they've never spoken face to face, but she knows bonnie and freya have. ]
[ despite trying to force herself to be calm, the tension in bonnie is obvious with the way she sits too straight and the way her fingers lace into each other, folded neatly on the table in front of them.
the smile she forces is small and tentative. there are so many factors to consider that for once she's finding it hard to jump straight to a single conclusion. forcing the picture of freya next to that of klaus? either way, that's gonna take a lot of time.
her voice is at least warm when she spots the other witch-- she wants to make the puzzle whole. ]
[It's Elena's face that takes her aback at first, not realizing that the other girl had been a Petrova doppelganger. The more famous of the two doppelgangers, her features are both stunning and incredibly familiar, having been etched into Freya's mind a long time ago.
Doppelganger blood was the one spell ingredient Dahlia always coveted but never managed to find.
Still, she keeps her features neutral beyond the smile she greets them both with, making her way over to sit across from them.]
Hello, both of you. My apologies if I kept you waiting.
[ elena manages to shake her head with a small smile of her own. she's so attuned to the emotions and reactions of others; the tension practically radiates into her. she motions to the seat across from them and releases the sharp breath she'd been holding. ]
Not at all. We got here a couple of minutes ago.
[ it's only a small pause later that she adds: ] Thank you. For agreeing to meet with us.
[ there's a bratty comeback on the tip of bonnie's tongue that gets bitten back in the space of a deep breath. she trusts freya-- or, she did. and she knows very well the fact that relation to a monster doesn't a monster make. ]
So... this is officially super awkward.
[ ok bonnie it wasn't bad until you decided to say that but at least it's more neutral than the other thing you were gonna say. bravo. ]
It's what we want, too. We all have enough to worry about. [ wonderland's antics keep them busy, and the mirrors legitimately freak elena out. they need to find a way home, not start an endless and unnecessary war. it's a slippery slope, but elena deftly avoids those if she can. ]
Especially if it's ... true. That Klaus ends up leaving.
[ there's skepticism there. it's hard for elena to process. ]
[ bonnie nods in support of elena's opening prompt. she thinks she'd rather let freya say what she wants before seeing what specific questions she'll answer.
especially because she can wait until a later time to ask. witchy stuff can wait. ]
[ elena sneaks a glance in bonnie's direction. assessing. ]
You mentioned unlike you, none of your siblings were able to escape being turned into monsters. [ all she knows are the bits and pieces elijah once gave her. freya is a witch, that much she knows, but how is she not a vampire?
[That isn't actually what she meant, though Elena's misinterpretation is understandable - after all, the definition of monster is a rather loose one. But the question she's actually asked is a factual one, and that she can answer.]
Because I'm not one. I was taken from my family when I was four years-old and was raised by my aunt, who was a more powerful witch than my mother.
[ where freya is started by his voice, klaus is stopped. just for a moment, for an instant, he pauses in the determined stride he's begun to take in the direction of the mansion - because it is her. it's her name and her voice in this blasted device connected to this foreign network in this strange place.
his sister is here.
but the relief and dread of that one thought is cast aside and stifled; it's not heard in his brisk tone. ] I assume not in Kansas anymore. I'm out by a garden. In front of a mansion. I hope this sounds familiar to you. [ because it doesn't to him~ ]
